A Story Worth Telling Again

We watched In the Shadow of the Moon this weekend, an unpretentious documentary about NASA's Apollo program. The movie consists of skillfully edited archive footage and interviews with some of the Apollo astronauts. It all unfolds in a relaxed, casual pace, but you can't shake this sense of danger, even though you know how it turned out. These crazy guys seemed to just take the danger part all in stride. I guess that's why they had "the right stuff." Put this movie on your list and watch for the unexpected and more pleasing part of the storytelling from astronaut Mike Collins, the man who orbited around the moon when Armstrong and Aldrin went off to stardom. Most touching is each man's soulful perspective of life on Earth upon his return. Mankind used to do such fascinating things. It makes you think about all the ridiculous stuff we are mired in these days. God help us.
